Therapy:
Ain Sofea needs help with all activities of daily living and
must be fed via a tube. Her physical therapies address body positioning,
stretching of her Achilles tendon and aim to improve her range
of motion and to boost muscle strength. One particular task is
to condition her reflexes to allow independent movement of her
arms and legs. Massage for her back and neck helps reduce her
favouring of one side and aids her mobility. Occupational therapies
include grab-and-release training with toys and sensory stimulation
using lightly applied brushing on her back. Since coming to Tasputra,
she has shown improved general awareness and responsiveness,
better head and neck control and improved posture as well as
mastering the ability to turn over by herself.

Therapy:
Muhaimin gets help with passive-active exercises, involving her
own and the therapist’s movement of her arms to increase
strength and mobility. She also needs the breaking of a reflex
whereby her arm movements trigger corresponding moves in her legs.
She undergoes a wide range of other physical and occupational therapies – including
cross-legged sitting, use of an arm pulley to help flexibility
and bridging exercises for her pelvis. Her spasticity and muscle
tightness have eased with treatment, her balance is better, as
is her speech, her ability to eat and dexterity.

Therapy:
Zamil undergoes daily stretching exercises and other therapies
to help treat muscle shortening and to give him relief and greater
flexibility of movement in his joints. Treatments include passive-active
exercises to improve muscle strength, posture, body alignment and
head control. Occupational therapies are geared to boost his fine
motor skills to help in the standard activities of daily living
(ADL).
Since coming to the centre, Zamil’s hand and neck control
have improved as have his social skills and general awareness of
his surroundings.

Lee Shen

development milestones. Speechless.
Therapy:
Lee Shen’s physiotherapy includes stretching of his Achilles
tendon to free up his ankle joint, mobility exercises for the spine,
rolling and prone lying to improve body alignment. He gets massage
every other day to reduce stiffness in his legs, hands and back,
which improves flexibility and reduces muscle spasm. Occupational
therapies such as hand rubbing improves blood circulation and the
use of toys for him to grasp or release helps coordination. Lee
Shen’s stiffness and spasticity have eased since he came
to Tasputra and he has better head control, balance and a stronger
back.

Roslan

Therapy:
Haziq gets a wide range of physical and occupational therapies
to help his condition, which is a disease affecting the muscles.
He undergoes active-passive exercises, foot stretching, uses the
arm pulley and has massages on his back, neck and limbs. He also
takes part in group activities and undergoes hand manipulation
therapies. Since coming to Tasputra, his head and neck movement
has improved and he can sit up better. He also has better hand
grip and control of shoulder movements.

Peng

Therapy:
Physiotherapies include passive-active exercises to improve the
range of motion of all Chan Peng’s joints. He also undergoes
back extensions, cross-legged and squat sittings and takes part
in the the centre’s horse riding sessions. His occupational
therapies include sensory stimulation, hand exercises, aquatherapy
and group activities to improve social skills.
Chan
Peng has shown great progress at the
centre, for example with his horse
riding for which he has developed better
posture and balance.

Zainuddin

Therapy:
Firdaus, one of the centre’s longer-time residents, undergoes
stretching exercises for his knees and other therapies to improve
his everyday activities, including dressing. He swims, rides and
exercises on the physioball to help his lower limb strength and
function. When Firdaus arrived at Tasputra he couldn’t stand.
He can now.

palsy, spastic quadraplegia. Blindness.
Therapy:
Mugilan undergoes weight bearing exercises to strengthen his body
and uses the arm pulley from a sitting and lying down position.
Therapies include splinting of his lower legs to reduce contraction
in the knee joints and passive-active work to improve his range
of movement and to ease muscle spasms, tightness and rigidity. Swimming
and other sensory stimulation – using brushes or vibration – has
improved Mugilan’s oral function and chewing abilities.

Therapy:
Racle undergoes active-passive exercises, aromatherapy and massage,
the latter to aid flexilbiltiy and blood circulation in his hands,
back, legs and calf muscles. Using the physioball helps his rollover
balance and spatial awareness.

Shawal

retardation, cerebral palsy,
right-side spasticity, hyperactivity.
Therapy:
Shawal’s affected side is manipulated and he is encouraged
to work on the arm pulley to improve use of both his hands and
to aid coordination. His occupational therapy has concentrated
on behaviour modification, improving his concentration and attention
through exercises such as sitting calmly for extended periods.
Though
his physical progress has been slow, Shawal
has come on with his social skills -- when
he is given something he no longer throws
it away and he can sit for longer periods
without getting up and going.
